Terroir : One of the best

On the road to Pauillac, after the prestigious Saint Julien vineyards scattered out on each side of the road, and just after the doorway made up by the two Pichons, is the hamlet of Bages. To the right is the famous Chateau Latour, peeping out through its fringe of trees.
Here also is Chateau Haut-Bages-Libéral. This is a small chateau, more of a comfortable manor house really. But the earth is wonderful: 28 hectare of deep Garonne gravel which make up a highly protected crest protected by the powerful thermal regulation of the twice-daily tides. Every day the eight kilometres between the two banks are emptied and filled up again. This mass of changing air ensures earliness, good maturity, and protects from sudden temperature changes.

The vineyards are planted with 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. This last grape variety is very rustic with a strong character which is perfectly at home in this type of soil. Haut-Bages-Libéral is one of Pauillac's purest wines, according to numerous connoisseurs and journalists.
